Growing Up!

It’s vet day and Capone had an appointment for his last round of shots. Dr. Kureshi at Cupertino Animal Hospital is really amazing and is always so attentive. I picked him because he had experience with large breed puppies, was an advocate of a raw diet and can always squeeze a patient in if need be.

Its always nice to have pleasant experiences at our vets office and Capone has never showed any fear or anxiety to go see his doc 🙂 Which makes me a very happy camper.

Waiting patiently for his turn

Getting love before the ouchies come!

What ouchies? I’m too busy eating these “cookies”!

Of course, as usual, Capone didnt even feel it! Well, maybe he did, but he wasnt letting on 🙂 What a tough guy! And after tipping the scales at 62 pounds, we were on our way home. Here is a look at an average Great Dane growth chart. Even though its not something you should follow to a “T” (every dog is different and grows in his proper way) its a nice way to get an idea of how much and how fast these beauties grow on average.

Birth weight: 1-2 lbs
Week 1: 2-3 lbs
Week 2: 3-5 lbs
Week 3: 4-7 lbs
Week 4: 5-8 lbs
Week 6: 12-20 lbs
Month 2: 18-27 lbs (13-17″)
Month 3: 30-45 lbs (17″-22″)
Month 4: 50-65 lbs (21″-25″)
Month 5: 65-85 lbs (25″-30″)
Month 6: 70-100 lbs (27-32″)
Month 7: 75-110 lbs (27-33″)
Month 8: 80-115 lbs. (27-34″)
Month 9: 85-120 lbs. (28-34″)
One year: 90-135 lbs (28-36″)

Full grown: 100-190 lbs (28″-38″)

For males, 140-170 lbs. & 33-36″is typical
For females 110-140 & 30-33″ is typical.

Capone even lost a tooth this week! I couldnt find it, he had been gnawing on a trachea that morning so I know its probably long gone. But here is a picture of the hole 🙂

Check out my pearly whites!

Until next check up!

Woof, Woof 🙂

Weekend Shenanigans!

What a great weekend! The weather was absolutely beautiful so we decided to go to our local park to get some fresh air. After being plagued with the flu last weekend, I was dying for some sunshine! This park is actually connected to a local Elementary school called Ponderosa Elementary and has a wonderful field that gets visited by all the local doggies in the evenings. We are regulars on Wednesday nights since Josh goes to softball and its always nice to run off some energy before it gets too dark.

Ready to hit the field!

So much to smell, Mom!

Wait for me Lily! I want to go to the playground, too!

Maybe I’ll come back for some yummy treats 🙂

Say cheese!

Kisses for Dad!

Headed to the playground

Checking out all the kids!

Enjoying the people watching 🙂

I was very happy at how Capone was so well-behaved. He even made some children friends and got to display how well he can sit for a tripe treat 🙂 We went back to the field after a little bit so that Capone could enjoy a little more of the sunshine.

This morning, we had our usual pancake breakfast made by my husband (he makes the best Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes) and we headed to the puppy socials we take Capone to every Sunday. Its at A Dog’s Life in Sunnyvale and its where we take our Puppy classes. We have the best time there and everyone is amazing with the doggies. They even have grooming, boarding, daycare and a long list of classes (which im sure we’ll take). Its also a nice way to run off some energy and have Capone play with his friends. They also have a webcam so you can see everyone in action!

Waiting for his friends to show up

Playing with Raja.. his girlfriend:)

Afterwards, we headed home and visited with some family and friends. All in all, it was a fantastic day and Capone ended it with some princess chutes and ladders and in his new comfy orthopedic bed!

Hooray for wonderful weekends!! Until next time!

Since we got Capone, Ive been so surprised at how fast and how much his heart beats even when he’s snoring! The expression, “beating out of his chest” puts new meaning when captured in a video! I’m still in awe at how big and massive everything on his relatively new body is 🙂

Bubbles, Tricks and Geese :)

Happy Chinese New Year everyone! Capone turned 4 months old last Sunday on the 22nd, and while I was envisioning us going somewhere amazing and fun-filled to celebrate, my body had other plans 😦 I came down with the worst flu I’ve had in a few years on Wednesday and it completely left me out of comission up until yesterday. I felt much better yesterday so I was able to at least take some pictures to commemorate the occasion 🙂

Happy 4 Months, Capone!

..and still growing 🙂

Enjoying his favorite treat, a trachea

I asked Lily what she wanted to give Capone as a present and she said “BUBBLES”!!! So out the bubbles came and Capone had a great time trying to pop them 🙂

Mesmerized by the floating bubbles!

Sorry it’s so blurry, two little children and a puppy and moving bubbles are very hard to photograph 🙂

Since I was feeling better, I decided to make it up to Capone today by going on an extra long walk to go see the geese that come visit every year at the Sunnyvale Community Center. Not to mention, there are tons of fountains, lots of nice doggies that also come to walk and Capone’s favorite, lots of music and dancers always practicing for some sort of event. This time, we were lucky enough to preview some Chinese fan dancers that were practicing a routine. It was so beautiful!  Capone was so intrigued by the geese and smart boy knew better than to go running after them. I think he was a little scared in fact! He got lots of love and lots of questions. Especially about his ears and what kind of doggie he was. Some people still think he looks like a Weimerainer or a Lab!

Enjoying the beautiful day!

Lots of geese to look at! But careful enough to stay his distance 🙂

After a nice piece of chicken…

He was ready for a little snooze 🙂

I also got the energy to make a little video of him showing off his tricks that he learned in Puppy 1 and is currently working on in Puppy 2. (Excuse the way I look, it had been a couple days since I had brushed my hair :P) Oh and for those who are curious, the mat we used for his Puppy 2 class worked GREAT! And yes, he did share with some of his fellow puppy classmates 😉

New Bed/Training Mat

So Capone is now officially in his Puppy 2 class! One of the requirements is to bring a soft mat that will be comfy and welcoming in order to teach “park”, “stay”, “on your mat”, etc. But silly me thought a doormat would be enough. Poor Capone didnt even have enough room to stretch out let alone have a mat that would be comfy and inviting enough to want to stay on. So I set out to find the most comfy mat (that could grow along with him) that I could find. I visited my local dog boutique (because we like to support local businesses). Its called For Other Living Things and its a wonderful store! Here is a short video of their dog section.

Capone loves to go in and select his own pig ears, tracheas and bully sticks for the week. Its one of our favorite places to visit since they always have a new treat for him to try. Well, we found the biggest mat/bed we could find but unfortunately it is a little too square to fit into his new crate. I couldn’t resist picking it up so that we could use it for his puppy 2 class (of course he’ll have the biggest mat in the class) especially since poor Capone needed a big one that we can use for more than a month! So I ordered one to fit his crate and we took the bed home.
I think he likes it!!
So much so, that he fell off of it because he was snoring so hard!
We’ll see how he does with it tomorrow at his Puppy 2 class! Maybe he might even share it with some of his smaller classmates.
Speaking of sharing, or lack thereof…. I think sharing Lily’s comfy chair days are over because she was NOT happy! Hee hee!!
Until next time! Woof Woof!

Today kicked off the season for American Idol and my singing Dane wanted to show off some of his pipes accompanied by his favorite squeaky and Lily as the background howls….

Hello world!

So I finally did it.. Ive decided to start blogging again and what better thing to blog about, than our little (ahem, well not so little) Capone 🙂 I guess it all started about 5 months ago when Josh and I were sitting around watching Dog 101 and it happened to be the Great Dane episode. It kind of went like this.. our eyes met, the hamsters started turning and we both said “we gotta get a Dane”! That night we emailed a handful of breeders and we found one in Oregon by the name of Mount Olympus Danes. 2 months later and voila.. Josh went to go pick up our beautiful boy, Capone.

Here he is in the car. Hes so little still! Taken on 11/19/2011
Josh made it back in the middle of the night so we got to bond with Capone a little before the kids woke up. In the morning, we surprised the kids and it was love at first sight. Well at least for Lily. Logan still had to do make adjustments since Capone liked to lean and lay on him pretty much every opportunity he got. We got him a crate which Logan and Lily happily tested..
Once he got settled in.. the adventures really began. Crying in the middle of the night, potty training, shots, you name it. Oh and Capone was a handful too! 🙂 Here is a few snapshots of the past 3 months just to fill you in 🙂
Wearing his first big boy collar
Eating his favorite treat, a trachea
Carrying the “baby”
Enjoying a playdate with his littermate, Graycie
Meeting a new friend from puppy school, Raja his BFF
and another Dane friend, Toby
Of course sleeping. Here he is at 10 weeks
And making himself at home on the kids’ furniture (the only furniture he’s allowed on)
We’ve also made the choice to feed him raw.. so here he is trying out raw chicken for the first time (he LOVED it) and since then have put him strictly on this kind of diet.
The weather started to get a bit cooler so we decided to get him a sweater.. which lasted about 5 minutes before he tried to gnaw out of it.
11 weeks 🙂
For Christmas, we spent it up in Shingle Springs, CA with Josh’s parents so Capone got to taste a bit of the country! He loved it! While I know hes a couch potato at heart, nothing cures the zoomies best than running out in the middle of a country plot of land 🙂
Here he is at 2 months:
The last time I was able to carry my “baby”. Christmas Eve 2011
When we got back home, Capone carried on his normal routine of…
Being a good playmate
And relaxing 🙂
In the past few days, Capone has also hit a few milestones! He reached 45 pounds, had his first grooming experience (he wasnt too fond of the hair dryer), outgrew his first crate..
Here is his upgrade! Its huge!
His first night in it 🙂
And also graduated his puppy class!
So far, life with Capone has been pretty amazing. Im sure I will one day grow tired of the “do you have a saddle for that thing?” or “is that a horse” comments but for now, its welcomed anytime someone stops me to check him out. What can I say? Im a Dane lover and my Dane is pretty awesome.
